Summer TV screening

Walking past all of the cafes/bars, you notice the typical tv screen through the window playing sports. The only difference here is that the game being played is soccer...or maybe I should say football...

Definitely feels like we're living in Europe sometimes out here in Astoria :)

Cafe culture

I find it so refreshing to have European style cafes (one of many is on our corner, which we've already taken advantage of). All of the tables are filled outside and people are relaxing and enjoying the hustle and bustle of Astoria life, with no pressure to order anything beyond a coffee.  My favorite was watching an old couple play a full game of scrabble with just two coffees on their table.

I do have to admit though that when it was our turn to hang out at the cafe, we couldn't help but order saganaki (my favorite greek dish -- fried cheese with lemon) with it!  At least we were staying true to the greek culture that permeates much of the neighborhood!

How can you stay in business at these prices?!

This produce market, United Brothers Fruit, is the largest produce market I've ever seen, such variety and so fresh!  Plus it is so cheap.  Tonight we bought a half gallon of milk, an eggplant, 2 cucumbers, 4 peaches, and 1 lb of cherries for $9.36... Toto, I'm positive we're not in Manhattan anymore!

Did I mention that this place is open 24/7?!!

ATM languages

The ATM next to our apartment offers service in numerous languages -- the winner: Yiddish.
